The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
