Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
