The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device

It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and introducing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but keeping fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
